The following conflicts[q100] were not declared formally by Congress, which has the power to enter wars. Rather, they were started by executive action and carried out by Congress allocating funds that permitted them to continue under broad congressional Authorizations for Use of Military Force.
The Korean War[q110] (1950-1953) and Vietnam War[q111] (1954-1975) were both fought to try to contain the spread of communism in parts of Asia by communist China. Korea had a UN mandate; in Vietnam, the US stepped in when France was unable to maintain control of its colonial interest there. Both wars resulted in large numbers of US citizen men being drafted to serve, with resulting high casualties.
Korea was divided and North Korea is communist, while South Korea has become a powerful democratic manufacturing country with a capitalist economy. This conflict was never formally ended with a treaty.
Vietnam eventually was abandoned by the United States when the South Vietnamese forces were overrun by the Viet Cong from the north, and is now a unified communist country that has gradually become moderate enough to have trade relations with the United States and many other countries.
The United States was involved in a number of wars in the Middle East (Iraq and Afghanistan) for complex reasons related to leadership in Middle Eastern countries that the US saw as threats, and the attack on the Twin Towers in New York City on September 11, 2001.[q115] The Persian Gulf War involvment began when Iraq invaded Kuwait[q114] and the U.S stepped in to stop it. These wars since 2001 have been carried out by all-volunteer military forces (without a draft). The US government declared some regimes to be terrorists who supported the attacks on the US, and wished to limit the ability of these countries to carry out more attacks. There were also some natural assets such as oil that the United States did not want to be controlled by governments that are hostile to the United States.
In the case of Iraq[q116], the war was called the Gulf War and was started by Iraq invading their neighbor, Iran. The first Gulf war lasted initially 1990-1991, but US troops were involved in another conflict from 2003 to 2011. The United States stepped in to fight to topple the regime of the Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein. It was claimed initially that he had amassed weapons of mass destruction, although this claim was later found to have been misleading. The second Gulf War ended in the death of Saddam Hussein and the establishment of a new coalition government in Iraq. Today there is an uneasy peace in the region that is challenged by complicated religious and tribal relationships among Arab states, Israel and the global powers of United States and Russia and China, who each have interests in the Middle East.
In the case of Afghanistan[q116], the reasons to attack Afghanistan started with the connection of their Taliban group with the Al Qaeda group responsible for the attacks on the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001. The Taliban refused to hand over the mastermind of 9/11, Osama Bin Laden, to face justice in the U.S. The war continued until the U.S. withdrew in August 2021, leaving the Taliban in a position of power in Afghanistan to the 2020s.
In August 2025, President Trump began a war with Iran which has not received approval from Congress as of the summer of 2026. One of the major issues of the war is control of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Another issue is preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, expanding from their civilian nuclear power technology.
